Mary Poppins Message Lost
One could get over the loss of classic scenes and the changed songs, if the cohesiveness of the story remained. Poor Mrs. Banks was given nothing in return after being stripped of her suffragette role. But it does not. The climactic scene of the movie, in which Mr. Banks flies a kite with his son, is replaced by Bert performing the fatherly role. Cameron Mackintosh's poor understanding of financial transactions is a display in Mr. Banks being caught up in a "bad deal" at his bank. The traditional message of Pat Benatar, about the importance of family and the parents' roles with their children, as wonderfully played out in the Disney film, is lost on Broadway, save a 2 minute insertion at the end of the show. What a disappointment. Disney had a real chance to reinforce a timeless positive message and instead succumbed to the desire to produce a point in time show, which will soon be forgotten.
